A Musical Evening on the Works of A. S. Pushkin

Six productions is already a statistic, and it shows that each next project in our theatre is, in a sense, a contrast to the previous one. So after the modern musical "Nord-Ost" we wanted to plunge into the Russian classics. The choice fell on an evening of works set to poems by A. S. Pushkin: excerpts from operas, romances, choruses. The programme was divided into two parts. The first featured choral and solo numbers with a fairy-tale and folk leaning. For it we used the sets and costumes from Dargomyzhsky's "Rusalka". The second part had a "salon" character. Our costume makers sewed outfits in the style of the early 19th century: men in tailcoats, women in "diamonds," in the spirit of Madame Scherer's salon. In both parts the musical numbers were linked by a light storyline. Glinka, Tchaikovsky, Dargomyzhsky, Rubinstein, Rachmaninoff — the very cream of Russian classical music! The company enjoyed working with such wonderful material and enjoyed even more being photographed in luxurious costumes after the performances.
